'Don't repeat
1999 mistake'
SEGAMAT (April 16, 2013): The Chinese
made a terrible mistake when they gave their full support and saved Umno in the
1999 General Election (GE).
“That
was an election when the Malays gave 60% of their support to the Reformasi GE
after Pakatan Rakyat (PR) de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim was politically
jailed,” Johor PKR chairman Chua Jui Meng said.
“And
how did the racist Umno repay the Chinese and Indians? You all know the
answer,” he said in a ceramah in Buloh
Kasap tonight.
“If
the Chinese had thrown their support behind the Reformasi Movement in 1999, the
Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN) would have been politically buried,” he added.
“The
Chinese lost that opportunity to bury Umno. This time, we are not about to
blunder away this chance. We cannot afford to lose a single vote.
“Every
vote counts and we ask everyone to come out in full force to cast their votes.
Johoreans working outside the state must also return to cast their ballots on
May 5.
“BN-Umno
will try to cheat, it will be the dirtiest general election ever and only a
people’s power can overcome the evil regime,” Chua said.
“We,
therefore, hope the Malays, especially Johor Malays, will also give the same
strong support to Anwar, as in 1999, and Malaysians and Malaysia will be saved
from the corrupt BN,” he said to a thunderous round of applause from a
7,000-people crowd.
He
said Felda settlers nationwide were given a raw deal by the BN government, and
that inflation and rising prices of essentials were expected should BN be
returned to power on May 5.
“Unfair
taxes like GST will have a domino effect and Barang Naik will be worsened with higher retail prices of oil,” he
added.
Chua
said: “Judge me by my track record as a five-term Bakri MP and my nine-year
performance as Health Minister.
“My
principles of governing will be the same. PR will be a caring and loving
oriented government.
“When
I was Health Minister, I transformed the ministry into a caring and loving
healthcare service. We must care and love our patients because without them, we
are nobody.
“Likewise,
we must care and love our people,” he added.
Chua
had started his day with an interview by a Chinese reporter at 10am
followed by a two-hour discussion and
briefing, from 11am to 1pm with a group of Malay supporters from Buloh Kasap.
Chua
then led representatives from Segamat and Sekijang PKR to pay their last
respects to a Chinese community leader Lim See Chor in Taman Segar.
After
lunch and handshakes with the people in Taman Utama, Chua held an hour-long
discussion and briefing with about 30 Abim, PAS and PKR supporters on campaign
strategies to be adopted in the election campaign trail to beat BN here for the
first time in electoral history.
He
then returned to his home stay for a short rest and was on the road again to
deliver a ceramah in Sekijang at 10pm, followed by another in Buloh Kasap’s
Taman Yayasan.
